Cooley Receives President's Pro Bono Service Award From State Bar of California
Palo Alto – Sept. 14, 2009 – Cooley Godward Kronish LLP received the State Bar of California's 2009 President's Pro Bono Service Award on Friday, Sept. 11 in recognition of the Palo Alto office's pro bono contributions. The award was presented at a reception held during the State Bar's annual meeting in San Diego.
"We are honored that the California State Bar has chosen to highlight our commitment to ensuring access to justice," said Maureen Alger, the firm's designated pro bono partner. "Especially during these challenging times, we remain focused on providing pro bono legal services that ultimately strengthen the communities in which we live and work."
In 2008, Cooley's Palo Alto office spent 13,000 hours on more than 175 pro bono matters. Particularly notable among its work were its efforts on behalf of the Domestic Violence Collaborative of San Mateo County and The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County's Guardianship Legal Services Project.
In California, Cooley's pro bono work includes guardianship cases, asylum petitions, impact litigation, representation of low income entrepreneurs, and non-profit advising. In the Bay Area Cooley partners with organizations such as the AIDS Legal Referral Panel, Bar Association of San Francisco Volunteer Legal Services Program, Bay Area Legal Aid, Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto, Law Foundation of Silicon Valley, Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, and Public Advocates.
The President's Pro Bono Service Award recognizes California attorneys who have provided or enabled the direct provision of legal services to poor persons or to organizations whose primary purpose is to provide legal services to the poor without expectation of compensation from the client.
